Step 1 — What Type of Barcodes Do You Need to Scan?

This single question determines whether you need a 1D or 2D scanner

1Standard retail products

EAN-13, UPC barcodes on product packaging → Any 1D or 2D scanner will work. Choose 2D for future-proofing.

2Delivery labels & parcels

Code 128, ITF-14, Royal Mail barcodes → 1D or 2D. Long-range imagers help with large cartons.

3QR codes, loyalty apps, tickets

QR code, Aztec, DataMatrix → You must choose a 2D area imager scanner. 1D lasers cannot read 2D codes.

4Pharmaceutical & healthcare

GS1 DataMatrix, FMD serialisation codes → You must choose a 2D imager. Many standard scanners struggle with small DM codes — check scanner spec.

Step 2 — Wired (USB) or Wireless (Bluetooth)?

The classic barcode scanner. Ergonomic pistol grip, trigger-operated. Best for medium-frequency scanning at a fixed point or while moving around.

Ring Scanner

Worn on the finger. Both hands free. Ideal for pick & pack, retail floor walking and any role where you handle products while scanning.

Smartphone Sled

Attaches to iPhone or Android to add a professional scan engine. Turns your existing smartphone into a dedicated scanner. Popular in hospitality and retail.

Rugged Android Handheld

An all-in-one ruggedised Android device with built-in scanner. Connects directly to WMS over Wi-Fi or 4G. For intensive warehouse and field operations.

Glove Scanner

Integrated into a work glove. Scan without removing PPE. Essential for cold store, clean room and high-throughput fulfilment.
