GS1 is mandating the move from 1D EAN barcodes to 2D QR and DataMatrix codes across all retail sectors by 2027. Here's exactly what you need to do now.
GS1, the global standards body that manages product barcodes, is leading a worldwide initiative called "Sunrise 2027" — transitioning from traditional 1D EAN-13 barcodes to 2D formats (QR codes and DataMatrix) on consumer products. From 2027, all UK retail scanners must be able to read 2D barcodes at point of sale.
The 2D barcode carries dramatically more information than a 1D barcode: not just the GTIN product number, but batch/lot number, serial number, expiry date and more — all in a single scan.
| Date | Milestone | Action Required |
|---|---|---|
| Now–2026 | Preparation phase | Audit your scanners, plan upgrades |
| 2026 | Early adopter pilots | Test 2D scanning in your operation |
| January 2027 | Sunrise 2027 | All POS scanners must read 2D codes |
| Post-2027 | Full 2D transition | Products switch to 2D-only labels |
Only 2D imager scanners can read QR codes and DataMatrix. Laser 1D scanners cannot. If your current scanner uses a laser (red line), it must be replaced or supplemented. To check: try scanning a QR code with your current device — if it reads it, you're 2D-ready. If not, you need an upgrade before 2027.
