CE marking, IP ratings, ATEX certification, RoHS, BS standards — a plain-English guide to what UK scanner certifications actually mean and which you need.
All electronic devices sold in the UK must carry either a CE mark (European conformity) or UKCA mark (UK Conformity Assessed, post-Brexit). This confirms the device meets EU/UK safety, health and environmental requirements. All scanners from Smart Mobile POS are CE/UKCA marked.
The IP (Ingress Protection) rating tells you how well a scanner is protected against dust and water. The format is IP[dust][water]:
| IP Rating | Dust Protection | Water Protection | Suitable For |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP40 | Protected against solids >1mm | None | Office, indoor retail |
| IP54 | Dust resistant | Splash resistant | Light warehouse, outdoor brief exposure |
| IP65 | Fully dust-tight | Low pressure jets | Warehouse, construction, outdoor |
| IP67 | Fully dust-tight | 1m immersion for 30 min | Cold store, food manufacturing, outdoor |
| IP68 | Fully dust-tight | Continuous immersion | Underwater applications |
ATEX (Atmosphères Explosibles) certification is required for equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres — chemical plants, oil & gas, grain storage, pharmaceutical manufacturing and mining. ATEX Zone classifications:
Our ATEX scanner range covers Zone 1 and Zone 2 environments.
All scanners we sell comply with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances — no lead, mercury, cadmium etc.) and are registered under the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive for end-of-life recycling.
