2D Barcode Scanner vs QR Code Scanner: What's the Difference?

Short answer: there isn't one. A 2D imager scanner reads QR codes AND all other 2D barcodes. Here's everything you need to know.

2D Scanner = QR Code Scanner

A 2D barcode scanner (also called a 2D imager or area imager) reads ALL two-dimensional barcode formats — including QR codes, DataMatrix, PDF417, Aztec Code and more. There is no separate "QR code scanner" product category for hardware scanners. If a scanner is described as a 2D imager, it reads QR codes.

The confusion arises because smartphones read QR codes with their cameras, so people assume dedicated scanners work differently. A professional 2D barcode scanner just does it faster, more accurately, and without needing to open a camera app.

2D vs 1D: The Real Distinction

When Do You Need QR Code Scanning?

  • Events ticketing — QR codes on digital and printed tickets
  • NHS and healthcare — GS1 DataMatrix on pharmaceuticals and medical devices
  • Restaurant table ordering — QR code menus and payment links
  • GS1 Sunrise 2027 — all UK retail scanners must read QR codes by 2027
  • Parcel delivery — many couriers use QR codes on labels
  • Loyalty and vouchers — QR-based loyalty apps and digital coupons

Our Recommendation

Always buy a 2D imager. They cost only marginally more than 1D scanners, read everything a 1D reads, and future-proof you for the GS1 2027 transition. All Generalscan models in our range are 2D imagers. See our full 1D vs 2D guide for more detail.
