HugeRock ATEX Rugged Tablets: Android You Can Legally Carry Into a Hazardous Area
A standard tablet in a petrochemical plant is a problem twice over. It breaks the first time it is dropped on concrete, and long before that, it is simply not allowed to be there. Anywhere with explosive gas, vapour or dust in the air, an ordinary device is a potential ignition source, and site rules, insurers and the law all say it stays outside the fence. The HugeRock EX range exists so your team can carry a proper Android tablet or phone into those areas legally and safely. Why an ordinary device is a non-starter in a hazardous area In a flammable atmosphere, it does not take much. A battery fault, a tiny internal spark, a hot surface, any of them can ignite gas or dust. That is why sites with explosive atmospheres (fuel depots, refineries, chemical plants, spray booths, grain stores, flour mills, distilleries) are split into hazardous zones with strict rules about what electrical equipment is allowed inside them. A consumer phone or tablet does not meet those rules, so taking one past the line is a safety breach, an insurance problem and, in many cases, against the law. Rugged is not the same as ATEX This is the trap. A tough, waterproof, drop-proof tablet is still just a rugged consumer device. Ruggedness is about surviving knocks, water and dust getting in. ATEX certification is about the opposite direction: making sure the device itself cannot release enough energy to ignite what is outside it. A tablet can be extremely rugged and still be completely banned from a Zone 1 area. For a hazardous area you do not need tough, you need certified. What ATEX certification actually gives you An ATEX certified device is built and independently certified to be intrinsically safe, meaning its electrical energy is limited by design so it cannot spark or overheat enough to ignite the surrounding atmosphere. That certification is what lets it cross into a hazardous zone that an ordinary device cannot enter. It is the single spec that matters here: without it, nothing else about the device counts. The HugeRock EX range, phone to tablet Every unit below is ATEX certified Android, so they run the apps, browsers and scanning tools your team already use, just in a form the site will actually let through the gate: HugeRock S50EX 4.5" rugged smartphone (£286): pocket-sized ATEX Android phone for staff who need calls, apps and scanning on the move in the zone. HugeRock T60EX 5.5" rugged smartphone (£296): a larger-screen ATEX phone, still one-handed, for more on-screen work. HugeRock T70EX 7" rugged tablet (£335): the go-to 7 inch ATEX tablet for inspections, work orders and readings in the field. HugeRock T71EX 7" 2200-nit sunlight tablet (£344): the same 7 inch size with a very bright 2200-nit screen for outdoor tank farms and yards where a normal display washes out. HugeRock T80EX 8" rugged tablet (£374): a middle-ground 8 inch screen, easier on the eyes for forms and schematics without becoming unwieldy. HugeRock T101EX 10.1" rugged tablet (£393): the full 10 inch tablet for P&IDs, drawings and detailed maintenance apps where screen space matters. How to pick the right one Three questions decide it: Phone or tablet? If it lives in a pocket and is mostly calls, apps and the odd scan, a phone (S50EX or T60EX) is right. If people are reading drawings, filling inspection forms or running maintenance software, go tablet. How much screen? 7 inch (T70EX, T71EX) for one-handed field work, 8 inch (T80EX) as a comfortable middle, 10 inch (T101EX) when detailed drawings or dense apps need the room. Is it used outdoors in bright sun? If so, the 2200-nit T71EX is worth the small premium: a standard screen is hard to read on a sunny tank farm or yard. Where they earn their keep Anywhere with an explosive atmosphere and a workforce that still needs to be connected: oil and gas, fuel and tank storage, refineries and petrochemical plants, chemical manufacturing, paint and spray operations, distilleries and breweries, grain stores, flour mills and other dust-heavy processing, plus utilities and pharmaceutical production. If your site risk assessment puts an area in a hazardous zone, this is the hardware that is allowed inside it. Pricing and advice All prices are ex VAT, with trade and volume pricing for fleets and multi-site rollouts. Choosing kit for a hazardous area is not a guessing game, so if you tell us the zone classification and what the team needs to do, we will point you at the right model and configuration.
