NFC & Smart Card Readers
ACS contact, contactless and NFC readers for ID, access, loyalty and payments.
ACS smart card and NFC readers are the de facto choice for ID verification, contactless access, secure logon, loyalty cards and merchant integrations across the UK. We supply the full ACS range — USB and Bluetooth, contact (ISO 7816) and contactless (ISO 14443 / NFC) — alongside compatible readers from Generalscan and BlueBird. Typical deployments include hospitality loyalty, hotel front-desk ID checks, NHS smartcard auth, secure printing release, transport ticketing and B2B account verification at point of sale.
Key features
- ACS PC/SC drivers. Plug-and-play with Windows, macOS, Linux and Android via PC/SC and CCID — the industry-standard smart card stack.
- Contact and contactless. Read ISO 7816 contact smart cards and ISO 14443 / NFC contactless cards and mobile wallets in a single reader.
- Bluetooth and USB-C. Wired desktop readers, USB-C pocket readers and Bluetooth readers for mobile and tablet POS.
- EMV-ready architecture. ACS readers are widely used in payment integrations — though card-present payments require a separately certified PIN device.
- MIFARE, DESFire and NTAG support. Works with all common contactless transit, loyalty and access-control card families.
- SDK and sample code. Free SDKs for Windows, Android and iOS with reference apps for ID read, signing and access flows.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take card payments with an ACS reader?
Not directly — card-present payments require a PCI-certified PIN device. ACS readers are for ID, access, loyalty and integration use cases.
Will an NFC reader read Apple Pay or Google Pay?
For non-payment use cases (loyalty, ID, ticketing) yes, where the wallet exposes the relevant NDEF/NFC payload. Payment tokens themselves require an EMV-certified terminal.
What's the difference between contact and contactless?
Contact readers have a slot for chip-and-pin style cards; contactless readers tap NFC cards and phones. Combi readers do both.
Will this work with our existing back-office software?
ACS readers expose PC/SC, so any application using the standard smart card stack will see them. Most middleware just works.
Are these certified for NHS use?
Yes — ACS readers are widely deployed across NHS Trusts for Spine and Care Identity Service authentication. We supply both desktop USB and dual-interface variants used in clinical workflows.
What does deployment and lead time look like?
Single units ship next day from UK stock. Larger trade orders (50+) are staged over 2-4 weeks, with optional asset tagging, serial-tracked batches and Trust/site-grouped despatch.
