ATEX Rugged Devices — Intrinsically Safe Phones & Tablets
ATEX-certified rugged Android smartphones & tablets for Zone 1 & 2 hazardous areas — oil, gas, chemical, pharma. Intrinsically safe, IP-sealed, UK stock.
ATEX-certified rugged devices are smartphones and tablets that are intrinsically safe — engineered so they can never release enough electrical or thermal energy to ignite flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust. That lets your team carry a fully connected Android device into Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas where an ordinary phone or tablet is simply not permitted, replacing paper, two-way radios and repeated trips back to a safe zone.
Smart Mobile POS supplies the HugeRock ATEX range — from a pocket-sized 4.5-inch smartphone to a 10.1-inch field tablet — for oil & gas, chemical and petrochemical, pharmaceutical, utilities, mining and grain-handling operations across the UK. Every device is genuinely ATEX-marked (II 2G or 3G, Ex ib/ic IIB T4), IP-sealed, drop-tested to MIL-STD-810G and supplied from UK stock with trade pricing, volume quotes and full manufacturer warranty.
How to choose an ATEX rugged phone or tablet
- Match the certification to your zone: Zone 1 areas (gas/vapour present in normal operation) need a Category 2 device marked II 2G Ex ib; Zone 2 areas can also use Category 3 (II 3G Ex ic). Check your site's DSEAR area classification before specifying.
- Phone or tablet: a compact smartphone (S50EX, T60EX) suits inspection rounds and lone-worker use; a 7-10 inch tablet (T70EX-T101EX) suits forms, schematics, asset data capture and control-room-grade viewing.
- Battery for the shift: runtimes vary widely — from 5,000 mAh up to the 18,900 mAh T80EX. Match capacity to shift length, and choose a replaceable battery if you need a hot-swap spare.
- Screen brightness for the environment: outdoor tank farms and offshore decks need a sunlight-readable display — the 2,200-nit T71EX is built for direct glare, while 1,000-nit models cover most plant work.
- Data-capture add-ons: look for NFC for tap-and-go asset and inspection tags, glove-and-wet touch, and USB host or RS232 ports if you connect scanners, instruments or legacy equipment.
Frequently asked questions
What does ATEX certification mean?
ATEX is the European directive covering equipment used in explosive atmospheres. An ATEX-certified device is independently tested and marked (for example II 2G Ex ib IIB T4 Gb) to prove it is intrinsically safe — it cannot release enough energy to ignite flammable gas, vapour or dust — so it can be used legally in classified hazardous zones.
What is the difference between Zone 1 and Zone 2?
Zone 1 is an area where an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation; Zone 2 is where it is unlikely and, if it does, only for a short period. Zone 1 requires a Category 2 device (II 2G); Zone 2 can use Category 2 or Category 3 (II 3G). Always confirm the classification of your specific area before choosing a device.
Can I use a normal rugged phone in a hazardous area?
No. A standard rugged phone may survive dust and drops but is not intrinsically safe — under fault it can produce a spark or hot surface capable of igniting a flammable atmosphere. Only an ATEX-certified (or IECEx-certified) device may be taken into a classified Zone 1 or Zone 2 area.
Which industries use ATEX rugged devices?
Oil & gas (refineries, tank farms, offshore platforms, fuel depots), chemical and petrochemical processing, pharmaceutical and paint manufacture, gas and energy utilities, water treatment, and mining, grain or flour handling where combustible dust is present — anywhere a site is classified under DSEAR/ATEX.
Do these devices run standard Android apps?
Yes. The HugeRock ATEX range runs standard Android 13, so your existing inspection, work-order, asset-tracking, EAM and lone-worker apps install and run normally — you gain hazardous-area certification without changing your software.
Are the devices supplied from UK stock with warranty?
Yes. Smart Mobile POS holds the ATEX range in UK stock and supplies it with full manufacturer warranty, trade pricing and volume quotes. Contact our team and we'll match the right model, mounts and accessories to your zone classification and workflow.
