Barcode Scanner Setup Guide

Pair a Bluetooth scanner or plug in a USB scanner and start scanning in minutes.

This guide explains how to connect a Bluetooth or USB barcode scanner to a phone, tablet or PC. You will need the scanner, its cable or a charged battery, and the device you want to scan into. It covers pairing, testing, and setting any prefix, suffix or symbology so scans land correctly in your app.

Pairing mode & device compatibility

Most barcode scanners default to HID or keyboard mode, where scans type straight into any field just like a keyboard, and this works across iOS, Android, Windows and macOS with no drivers. Use SPP or serial mode only if a specific app or SDK requires it, as it needs software support. On iPhones and iPads a physical scanner keyboard can hide the on-screen keyboard, which is normal. Always confirm the scanner lists the platform you use, as some Bluetooth models pair with Windows and Android but not iOS.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my scanner not appear in the Bluetooth list?

Make sure the scanner is charged and switched on, then put it back into pairing mode by scanning the pairing barcode or holding the pairing button until it flashes. On your device turn Bluetooth off and on again and refresh the list. Remove any old paired entry for the scanner first, as a stale pairing can block a fresh connection.

Why do scans not show up in my app?

Check the cursor is active in a text or search field before scanning, as HID mode types wherever the cursor sits. Try scanning into a plain notes app to confirm the scanner works, which isolates whether the problem is the scanner or your app. Some apps need a specific input box selected before they accept scanned data.

Why does each scan run onto the previous one?

The scanner may not be adding a return after each scan. Scan the configuration barcode in the manual that appends a carriage return or enter as a suffix. This tells the app to move to the next line or field after every scan, which keeps entries separated and stops data merging into one long string.

Why will certain barcodes not scan at all?

The barcode type may be disabled by default. Find the symbology, such as QR, Code 128 or EAN, and scan its enable barcode in the manual. Also check the barcode is clean, well lit and not too small or damaged. Hold the scanner steady at a sensible distance and try a slight angle to cut glare.

Why does the scanner keep disconnecting?

Bluetooth range is limited, so stay within a few metres of the device and avoid thick walls or heavy interference. Keep the scanner charged, as low battery causes drops. Many scanners sleep to save power and reconnect on the next trigger pull, which is normal. If drops persist, re-pair the scanner freshly in your Bluetooth settings.
