Receipt paper is the least glamorous purchase in retail — and one of the few you'll make every single month for as long as you trade. Most businesses buy it the same way: whatever's cheapest in the right-ish size, reordered in a panic when the drawer under the till is down to its last roll. That habit quietly costs money three ways — rolls that don't fit properly, paper that fades before the refund period ends, and a per-metre price nobody ever checked. Why thermal paper is different Almost every modern receipt printer is thermal — there's no ink and no ribbon, because the paper itself is the consumable that does the work. A thermal roll is coated with heat-reactive chemistry, and the printhead writes by heating precise dots. That's why the right paper matters more than it did in the ink era: buy the wrong grade and it's not the print quality that suffers first, it's your printhead, your receipts' lifespan, or both. Sizes: the two numbers that matter (and the one everyone forgets) A till roll is described by width × diameter, e.g. 80 x 80mm. Width is non-negotiable — it must match the printer. 80mm is the standard for counter printers in retail and hospitality; 57/58mm is the compact standard for mobile printers, card terminals and small counter units. A wrong-width roll either won't seat or wanders and jams. Diameter decides how often you change rolls. An 80mm-diameter roll is the counter-printer default; mobile and belt-worn printers take slimmer rolls (often 40mm or less) to fit the case. Bigger diameter = fewer mid-rush changes, but only up to what the printer's bucket physically accepts. The core is the forgotten number. Most rolls wind on a 12.7mm (half-inch) core, but some printers expect a different core or a coreless roll — and a too-large core means less paper per roll than the label suggests. The rule: spec rolls from the printer's manual once, write the size on the drawer where the rolls live, and never guess in a stationery aisle again. Coatings and grades: why receipts fade — and how to stop it Every shopkeeper has been handed a receipt that's faded to a blank grey strip. That's thermal chemistry ageing — accelerated by heat, sunlight, plastic wallets and friction. It matters commercially: a receipt is a VAT record and a warranty document, and customers will bring back an unreadable one. Standard-grade thermal is fine for cafés and fast turnover, where a receipt's working life is minutes. Top-coated / premium grades add a protective layer over the thermal chemistry — sharper print, better resistance to fading, moisture and handling, and less chemical residue on the printhead. Worth it wherever receipts must stay legible for months: electronics, trade counters, pharmacies, anything with warranties. Phenol-free (BPA-free) paper has become the default expectation in the UK, with BPA restricted in thermal receipts for several years now. If you're clearing old stock from a cupboard, this is a reason to check what it actually is. Impact printers are a different aisle entirely. Kitchen dot-matrix printers use plain or multi-ply bond rolls plus an ink ribbon — thermal rolls in an impact printer produce nothing at all. Storage is part of the deal: keep boxes cool, dry and out of sunlight — not on top of the kitchen pass, not on a windowsill — and rotate oldest stock first. Length per roll varies with paper thickness and core size, so the honest comparison is pence per metre, not pounds per box. Thinner paper means more metres per roll and fewer changes; the trade-off is a flimsier receipt. The other saving is boring but real: buy by the box, not the five-pack. A 30-second consumables audit Do you know your roll spec (width × diameter × core) without looking? Write it down once. Are warranty-relevant receipts still legible after six months in a drawer?
