What UHF RFID actually does (and doesn't) A passive UHF tag costs pennies, needs no battery, and wakes up when a reader's radio energy reaches it — replying with its unique ID. The reader's anti-collision protocol sorts out hundreds of simultaneous replies, which is why RFID counts populations of items rather than individual labels. Range runs from centimetres to 10+ metres depending on reader power, antenna and tag. The honest limits: liquids absorb UHF and metal reflects it, so tag placement matters on drums and racking — and RFID complements barcodes rather than replacing them, which is why most of the readers below also carry a 2D barcode engine.
